I've learned so much from reading the comments and questions - Thank you for providing this forum!
My son's post-secondary program is nearby but across state lines. (The next closest in-state program is much further away.) Although the individuals from the various state agencies and the university are willing to collaborate, the 2 different states and 4 different organizational silos still present barriers. How can we facilitate the process and knock down these artificial barriers to facilitate job placement?
I thought that my son's father and I had done a good job of fostering independence in our son with an intellectual disability. However, I found when he started his post-secondary program at University of Delaware that we had unwittingly been making many decisions FOR him rather than WITH him. I would love to see more self-determination efforts built into IDEA and IEPs to provide more guidance to both schools and parents ...more »
