We need high school jobs for students with disabilities as well as post-secondary opportunities. Paid job coaches could help entice local businesses to provide internships for students with disabilities. An ideal program would provide paid jobs for the teens while they learn the skills for job success as well as a paid job coach. A structure for teens to move from apprentice to intern to staff to manager in multiple fields creates a model for how special needs teens turn into great employees. Just like other teens who get paid in their early jobs, special needs students also deserve opportunities for paid employment, not just internships and volunteer work.
